We Think You’d Agree, the World Needs More ‘Reason’

wgrlogoAwhile back, we posted about how the award-winning, nationally syndicated “BackStory with the American History Guys” public radio program was taking off.

Now its sister program at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, “With Good Reason,” is getting its own boost. Beginning Thursday, the weekly public radio show — which highlights the research and scholarship of faculty in Virginia’s colleges and universities — will be doubling in length, to an hour.

Among host Sarah McConnell’s guests in the first 60-minute program will be U.Va. mathematics professor Christian Gromoll, who will discuss his research into the social behavior of bee colonies. (Read more about this episode here.)

The show airs at various times on various stations, and not only in Virginia; it can also be heard in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Tennessee, Georgia, Alaska, California and Michigan. Radio ‘History Guys’ Making Inaugural Splash

BackStory‘s “American History Guys” are in Washington this weekend for a live show, to begin Saturday at 11 a.m., on “Inaugurations in American History” at the National Museum of American History. The public radio program is being cablecast and webcast by C-SPAN3′s American History TV and also being covered by Voice of America Television News.
But the media coverage does not stop there: CNN has now scheduled three live, nationally broadcast interviews with BackStory’s hosts, Peter Onuf, Ed Ayers and Brian Balogh.

All three BackStory hosts will be interviewed on presidential history and inaugurations by CNN’s Kate Bolduan and John Berman Saturday between 4 and 5 p.m.

Bolduan and Berman will also interview Ayers on the symbolism and use of the Bible during presidential inaugurations, during the 5 o’clock hour on Sunday. And between 7 and 8 p.m. that same evening, the Guys will pick up on the history of presidencies and inaugurations during another live broadcast from the National Mall with CNN hosts John King and Erin Burnett .

Public radio’s contemporary take on American history, “BackStory with the American History Guys” is a national, weekly one-hour show and podcast that is a program of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. All three hosts have their roots in U.Va.’s Corcoran Department of History; Balogh remains on the faculty, Onuf recently retired, and Ayers has gone on to become president of the University of Richmond.

Music Class Adds WTJU Intros to Syllabus

Regular listeners to U.Va. radio station WTJU’s classical music programming may hear some unfamiliar, but knowledgeable, voices introducing the music they hear in the next few weeks.

Students in music professor Bonnie Gordon’s fall-semester music history class first paired up to research their favorite classical compositions, then trekked to the WTJU studios in the Lambeth Field apartment complex to record intros to the pieces. The students’ work began airing Sunday and will continue through Dec. 1. (For a list of the works they are introducing, click here.)

In an email, Gordon said the impetus behind the project came from a student.

U.Va. Voices Talk Innovation

Time is flying by. Could “Tomtoberfest” really have been two weeks ago?

OK, I realize the Tomtoberfest was probably not on the world’s calendars, though it seemed like a pretty successful event when it happened Oct. 27.  Billed as “an Elliewood Block Party and Corner Crawl: a FREE day of grilling, live music and beer gardens, that celebrates Innovation at UVA and in the Community,” the event celebrated U.Va. research and entrepreneurship, while encouraging some creative thought on possible uses for the plaza in front of the OpenGrounds Studio. (Check out the Newsplex’s report, or the Cavalier Daily report.)

If that all sounds good to you, you can still capture a little of the conversation. UVA Innovation has archived several interviews that WTJU station manager Nathan Moore conducted with various “voices of innovation” from around the University and made them available on the U.Va. Innovation YouTube channel. Listen to the Tomtoberfest interviews here.

Two Options for Election Watching

All of us here in Battleground Virginia are soooo ready for the election to be over, so we can finally eat dinner without the phone ringing. Of course, the Postal Service and radio and TV ad managers may go through a little income withdrawal.

But assuming you actually want to know who wins this thing, there are two good local options. (And probably more, but these are two that caught our eye. Feel free to add more in the comments.)

• U.Va.’s own Morven Farm will hold a free election-watching gathering in its theater, beginning at 7 p.m., “featuring live coverage, engaging discussions, and election trivia.” Registration is required; contact Michelle at mrr5q@virginia.edu.

• If you’re looking for a rowdier scene, WTJU is hosting a bipartisan Election Night party, featuring three bands, at The Southern Café & Music Hall on Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall. There’s a $10 cover charge for this one, but it’s only $5 if you were an “I voted” sticker. The proceeds support WTJU, U.Va.’s community radio station.
