Student Tech Survey Finds Apple Gaining Ground

ITC’s annual technology survey of incoming first-year students is finally out (now that they are all rising second-years). As usual, the results are interesting …

According to ITC’s Lauren McSwain-Starrett …

  • Ownership of computers is at fully 100 percent of the first-year class
  • 43 percent of first-years brought Macs with them, showing Apple’s continued staggering growth (rising steadily each year since a decade ago when just 3 percent had Macs)
  • In contrast, Windows usage continues to fall, now just 56 percent (a decade ago it was 95 percent)
  • Nearly 60 percent own a portable network device such as smartphone or PDA – just two years ago, only 5 percent did!
  • 1 in 3 brought an iPhone or iPod touch

Getting Guests Online

Starting Tuesday, ITC has set up a new way for guests to access the U.Va. wireless network.

It’s much like the system found in hotels: The guests will need a passcode, which must be generated by a U.Va. sponor.

The sponsor first goes to a page to generate the passcode. The sponsor specifies how long the code will be needed – either one or seven days – and the code is automatically generated.

When guests connect to the “Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless” wireless network and open a Web browser, they will be automatically redirected to the network setup page. Following the guest path from there takes them to a page where they will be prompted to enter their passcodes to gain Internet access.

Guests will need to keep their passcodes handy, as they will need to use them every time they connect to the “Welcome_to_UVa_Wireless” wireless network.
