UVA Today’s Matt Kelly reports:
The last scaffolding encasing the Rotunda at the University of Virginia is coming down.
The scaffolding, erected around the building last May, was part of the first phase of extensive renovations and restorations to the centerpiece of the University. Workers replaced the leaking roof and the oculus skylight, and repaired the exterior brick walls, windows and ornamental sheet metal.
The scaffolding is coming down ahead of schedule. The exterior restoration work was to continue into the summer, and workers planned to remove the scaffolding for graduation and then re-erect it. But construction crews have finished the bulk of the work and once the scaffolding is down, it will remain down.

Waynesboro has become an increasingly attractive suburb of Charlottesville for U.Va. and other local workers. It’s a pretty easy (and scenic) hop over Afton Mountain via I-64, as long as the weather is cooperating, and the cost of living in the Valley seems a little lighter.
For those who want to save even more money, RideShare is seeking commuters interested in forming a vanpool from the Waynesboro Park & Ride lot to locations at U.Va. and downtown Charlottesville. To that end, they are holding a vanpool formation meeting on Tuesday, June 28 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission’s Water Street Center in downtown Charlottesville.
Lunch will be provided, and transportation to and from the meeting can be arranged. Attending the meeting will not obligate you to join a vanpool.
For information, call RideShare at 888-974-5500 or email rideshare@tjpdc.org. RSVP online at www.RideShareInfo.org.

A good Monday morning to you. How was your commute?
For many, that question would elicit a snarl.
This morning at 10 in Washington (assuming no traffic delays), former U.S. transportation secretaries Norman Mineta and Samuel Skinner will stand alongside Gerald Baliles, director of U.Va.’s Miller Center of Public Affairs, to release what is being billed as a bipartisan report outlining 10 recommendations to fix the nation’s transportation system. You can watch a live webcast here.
According to the advance publicity:
The report concludes that the country’s transportation infrastructure is no longer adequate and that it is costing the U.S. economy dearly. It offers 10 practical and sustainable recommendations, including:
• looking beyond the gas tax to finance highways and other infrastructure
• effectively reducing traffic jams that are wasting too much fuel and too many Americans’ time
• giving priority to transportation projects that will have the greatest long-term economic benefit
The report is based on the David R. Goode National Transportation Conference, which the Miller Center hosted.

In case you missed it on today’s UVA Today, Parking and Transportation has a new weapon against parking ticket deadbeats.
Something like that could ruin your whole day.

Got a nice note from Marie Payne at the Darden School, and thought it was worth sharing:
Can you please include a great big THANK YOU to all of the people who have been shoveling and cleaning the sidewalks, parking lots, etc throughout all of this crazy weather? My husband works as a painter at Facilities Management and he has been one of many who have been working so hard – and with tired aching muscles and backs – to keep everything as open as possible. The rest of us who are employed at, or attend, UVA aren’t even aware of how much it takes to make it easier for us to come to work and get around once we’re here.
… to which I say, HEAR, HEAR! Those folks have been doing incredible work, and deserve our gratitude.
(Incidentally, here’s a piece about their efforts that UVA Today published a couple of storms ago.)

Saturday’s scheduled concert at the JPJ Arena with George Strait and Reba McEntire has been moved to April 3 due to “potentially hazardous travel conditions.”
The weather forecast is calling for snow, and apparently concert organizers don’t want people to face the choice between risking life and limb and eating pricey concert tickets.
All tickets and parking passes for the event will be honored on April 3, according to the announcement.

Rumor has it that there is some sort of Irish music group coming to Scott Stadium next week.
Not sure how Riverdance will sell out a 60,000-seat stadium, but …
OK, OK, just kidding. U2 is headed for Charlottesville for a big show on Thursday. In fact, they’re already setting up a stage that apparently requires some 102 tractor-trailer loads of stuff be hauled in.
Such a large undertaking requires a lot of accommodations, particularly on a weekday. The U.Va. Department of Parking and Transportation has the lowdown on the parking situation, road closures and bus schedules.
(A word to the wise: I would avoid the area around JPA and West Main like the plague before and after the show.)

A head’s up for those of you in or near Charlottesville: Bike Virginia, a major five-day biking event featuring hundreds of riders, is wrapping up today at Charlottesville High School. Bikers often head out in their own or in groups for little side trips — especially to the University area — so keep your eyes open and share the road.

This just in from the Med Center: Lee Street will be closed this weekend to allow for the installation of a crane to help with the Emily Couric Cancer Center construction.
Not sure if this is related to the crane that’s coming down on Water Street, but it could be.

We have a traffic advisory up on UVA Today regarding the South Lawn construction. Beginning Sept. 13, workers will begin installing the steel support beams in preparation for building the terrace that will extend over JPA.
The South Lawn Web site has an excellent web cam that you can use to watch the progress.

If you’ve driven around U.Va. this summer you know that there’s lots of construction projects currently under way, causing various degrees of traffic interruptions. On UVA Today, we have a travel advisory page where you can monitor the latest contruction/traffic updates. The most recent update is from yesterday regarding a stretch of of Emmet Street near the Bavaro Hall construction site that will be temporarily reduced from three lanes to two to accommodate installation of a fire hydrant.
