Hoos Miss New York?
Leigh-Taylor Smith, a 2007 U.Va. graduate who majored in theatre, was crowned Miss New York on Saturday night and will compete in the Miss America contest in January in Las Vegas. Competing as Miss Brooklyn, Smith currently works as assistant designer at the interior design firm Scott Sanders LLC. Her platform is “Volunteering Changes Lives.” She received a $6,500 scholarship award to the college of her choice and, according to a report in Newsday, hopes to use the scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in interior design at Parsons The New School for Design in Manhattan. She also won a $250 Preliminary Swimsuit Award and a $250 Preliminary Evening Gown Award. Smith is from Hampton, Va., and the Newport News Daily Press reports today that she is the daughter of legendary Hampton High School football coach Mike Smith and his wife, Lisa.
The Daily Press quoted Smith: “I’ve been competing in pageants since I was 10 years old. This is definitely the pinnacle of it all - so far.” In 2006 and 2007, she competed in the Miss Virginia pageant, finishing as the third runner-up both times.
