It’s Send-off Season
Things are generally pretty quiet on Grounds for the summer. But there’s a tsunami building out there …
One definite sign, of course, is summer orientation, which is now in full swing. Large gaggles of incoming first-year and transfer students, usually with parents in tow, are showing up fairly regularly now to get, well, oriented.
But we’re also getting word of “send-off” gatherings around the world. According to Darci Spuck of U.Va.’s Office of Engagement, there will be more than 80 such events this summer, including eight outside the U.S. Generally, the hosts invite incoming students and their parents — and sometimes current students — to meet local U.Va. alumni and psych them up for their U.Va. experience. The send-offs are a joint effort of UVaClubs and UVaFamilies.
One such gathering was held June 13 in Beijing, and attracted some coverage from sina.com (warning: text may be a little difficult to read).
Of course, we welcome all the new ‘Hoos, and look forward to your arrival in another two months or so.
