U.Va. Students, Athletes Rally for Boston College Linebacker

U.Va. students and athletes are joining those at other ACC schools in raising money in honor of Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich, to support research into Ewing’s sarcoma. Herzlich, the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Year, was stricken with the rare disease last spring, and recently announced that he is now 99 percent cancer-free after undergoing radiation and chemotherapy. (You can read a good Sports Illustrated story on Herzlich’s battle here.)

The goal of “Hoos for Herzlich 94″ (94 is his jersey number) is to raise $9,494.94 to donate to Uplifting Athletes, “a national non-profit organization aligning college football with rare diseases and raising them as a national priority through outreach, research, education and advocacy.” The group plans to present Herzlich with a check before kickoff of Virginia’s Nov. 14 game with Boston College in Scott Stadium.

U.Va.’s football players plan to donate their per diem money from the day of the Boston College game to the cause. If you would like to donate, click here or send a check (made out to: “Uplifting Athletes, memo line-UVa) to U.Va. Student Council, Newcomb Hall Box 400705, Charlottesville, VA 22904.

Update, Nov. 9, 2:30 p.m.: With the Boston College game looming on Saturday, organizers report that they are approaching the halfway point in their fundraising.
