Lacrosse Player Organizes Benefit Flag Football Tournament to Honor Fallen Teammate Will Barrow

U.Va. lacrosse player Max Pomper has organized a flag football tournament, to be held this weekend, in honor of his late teammate, Will Barrow. The tournament — which will include at least 20 teams, featuring members of lacrosse teams from throughout the region, U.Va. fraternities and sororities, and U.Va. lacrosse alumni, plus any others that would like to enter — will benefit HELP, U.Va.’s non-profit, student-run crisis hotline.

Barrow died a year ago this month, devastating his friends in the tight-knit lacrosse community. The tournament appears to be a constructive way to turn that grief into a positive.

“The hotline has been underfunded for 17 years with no sponsorships,” said Pomper, a fourth-year on the 2010 Virginia men’s lacrosse team who grew up on Long Island with Barrow. “We want to honor our friend Will Barrow and spread awareness of suicide prevention. With the HELP hotline, there is an outlet for people in need in times of crisis around U.Va. and the Charlottesville area. This is something we wish Will would have known about.”

Entry and donation details after the break.

The tournament costs $150 per team with a roster limit of 10 people per team for the 7-on-7 tournament. All participants will receive an orange and blue bracelet that reads “Remember Will Barrow,” with the hotline number, 434-295-TALK, inscribed on the inside.

All inquires can be sent to WBmemorial23@gmail.com. Donations are welcome via checks payable to Madison House; please write on the memo line - “HELP - Will Barrow.”

Mail donations to Kyle Menendez, 222 14th St. NW, Apt. 2, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
