Field Hockey Club Sets High Standard for Varsity

As. U.Va.’s varsity field hockey team prepares to compete tomorrow in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament, word comes that the U.Va. club field hockey team (pictured above) has already captured a national championship — its second in three years.
At the club level, players pay a substantial portion of their expenses (some may receive a portion of the Student Activity Fee), recruit from the student body and often coach themselves.
At the national championship tournament, held in Virginia Beach, U.Va. defeated teams from the University of Pittsburgh, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of Delaware and finally the University of Maryland in what was a field of 15 teams.
The club won the 2007 national title and finished as the runner-up last year,
