Labor of Love: Baseball Team Honors Fallen Fan

There are few forces on Earth powerful enough to blast a college student out of bed and into a schoolyard, shovel in hand, at 9 a.m. on a Sunday morning.

One of those forces, though, is a great cause.

The U.Va. baseball team, plus coaches and staff, were among those who gathered at Woodbrook Elementary School early Sunday morning to renovate a dilapidated baseball field in honor of Carson Raymond, a 9-year-old Woodbrook student who died earlier this fall from complications of H1N1 flu. Carson was a huge baseball fan, and his parents organized the effort to rebuild the field in his memory.

“The project went great,” head coach Brian O’Connor said via e-mail. “We were able to accomplish everything they need us to get done. Demolished the old backstop, cleaned up the area, cut out a bunch of grass from the infield, and spread a lot of tons of dirt to create the new infield.

“The Raymond family was very moved by our team’s efforts. Overall, it was a wonderful project and I was very proud our team was involved.”

You can read the Daily Progress story on the team’s work here. And here is the video report from WVIR-NBC-29.
