Cavalier Sports Are No. 1 (At Least for Now)

It’s still pretty early, but U.Va. tops the Division I standings for the Learfield Sports Directors Cup, an award given by the National Association of College Directors of Athletics to the university with the top national finishes in seven women’s and seven men’s sports.

With six of eight fall sports completed, U.Va. is in first place with 337 points, just ahead of North Carolina (283) and perennial winner Stanford (281).

The Cavaliers are paced by the men’s soccer team’s national championship, won in thrilling fashion on Sunday. U.Va. teams also scored points in men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey and women’s soccer.

The two remaining fall sports are volleyball and football; U.Va. will not receive any points for those. But the outlook for the rest of the year is good, with Virginia’s strong programs in women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming, baseball, tennis, and men’s and women’s lacrosse.
