U.Va. Grad’s Film “Kavi” Gets Oscar Nod
After graduating from U.Va. in 2001 (degrees in French and English), Gregg Helvey earned an MFA in film from USC in 2009, and his thesis project, a 19-minute fictional film, “Kavi,” has been nominated for an Academy Award in the “Live Action Short” category.
Having already nabbed a Student Academy Award gold medal in June, now Helvey is going to the big show on March 7. The other four contenders for best live action short are “Miracle Fish,” “Instead of Abracadabra,” “The Door,” and “The New Tenants”
The official nomination came in this morning, as we predicted in a Dec. 23 post.
The movie is about modern slavery. According to the Web site, “Kavi is a boy in India who wants to play cricket and go to school, but instead he is forced to work in a brick kiln as a modern-day slave. Unsatisfied with his fate, Kavi must either accept what he’s always been told, or fight for a different life even if he’s unsure of the ultimate outcome.”
