Big Day for Cavalier Football Fans

For hard-core college football fans, or even medium-core fans, today is a big day: National Signing Day, or as some refer to it, “Recruiting Christmas.”

This is the first day that football recruits can sign National Letters-of-Intent, which officially commit them to their their colleges of choice. Some of these kids have been wooed and pursued for years, and many fans eagerly keep track of their every whim — which can be maddening, as anyone who deals regularly with teen-age males can understand.

(We’ll leave it to you to assess the sanity of adults who are obsessed with such things.)

Enough background. U.Va. was expecting to hear from 16 recruits today, and all 16 have now faxed in their letters, according to the Web page the Athletics Department set up. My favorite Cavalier sports blogger, Jeff White, is doing a blow-by-blow report, starting at 7 a.m. and presumably ending with head coach Mike London’s 4 p.m. press conference.

The people who rate such things are not impressed by U.Va.’s class, but that is to be expected given the uncertainty surrounding the coaching situation throughout the recruitment period (uncertainty that ended with the departure of Al Groh and the subsequent hiring of London, pictured above). But there are a few potential jewels in the group, including Morgan Moses, a huge offensive lineman from the Richmond area who played for Fork Union Military Academy last season, and Kevin Parks, one of the most productive high school running backs in history.
