We’re No. 1, Three Times Over?

The polls don’t appear to be out yet, but by the end of the day U.Va. could have three spring sports ranked No. 1 in the country, after a pretty impressive weekend.
The headliner game was the No. 2-ranked Cavalier men’s lacrosse team’s 11-10 victory over top-ranked Syracuse on a glorious Sunday afternoon in Klockner Stadium. (Plus a nice piece from Jeff White here.) As you can see from Matt Riley’s photo above, there was a mammoth crowd in attendance, even with most students gone on spring break.
Just a long home run away in Davenport Field, the baseball ‘Hoos were sweeping Dartmouth and Wright State in a doubleheader, completing a 3-1 weekend that may enable them to retain their No. 1 national ranking.
A couple of blocks away, the No. 1 U.Va. men’s tennis team was whipping No. 4 Texas, 9-4, at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center.
That’s not all, though. The U.Va. wrestling team won its first ACC Tournament championship since 1977, and the Cavalier softball team swept its own Cavalier Classic. And the women’s lacrosse team, ranked ninth in the country, went on the road to beat No. 13 Penn State.
We won’t talk about the basketball teams, OK? Let’s just say that Maryland should feel very fortunate to have escaped JPJ with a win.
