U.Va. Football Reality Series Debuts Tonight

Tonight marks the debut of an 18-week reality TV series, “Virginia Football: The Building of a Program.” The first episode airs at 9 on Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic.

Produced by the NASCAR Media Group, the weekly series was “inspired by the HBO Sports Productions ‘Hard Knocks’ and ‘Jimmie Johnson: The Road to Daytona,’” said Jon Oliver, U.Va.’s executive associate athletics director.

According to the announcement, “Each episode will deliver an in-depth look at the building of the football program under first-year head coach Mike London,” including behind-the-scenes footage. The series will conclude the week after the Cavaliers’ season-opener against the University of Richmond.

Each episode will debut on Monday nights at 9, and will be replayed at various times throughout the week. The episodes will also be available online at VirginiaSportsTV.com.

Here’s sports columnist David Teel’s take on the series. And here’s how to find Comcast SportsNet in your area. And here’s a trailer promoting the series.

As Teel points out, this is the second innovative marketing masterstroke in London’s tenure. Earlier, he held a spring practice at Old Dominion University, in the heart of Virginia’s recruit-rich Hampton Roads area.

[...] I didn’t realize that the UVa football team had an 18 week reality tv show running right now!  That’s pretty neat, I’m definitely going to have to catch up on the episodes I missed online.  I used to teach at the elementary school by Hoover High School, in Alabama, when MTV’s reality show, Two A Days was being filmed.  The football players were the biggest celebrities to my 4th graders and I remember them coming over to the elementary school and signing autographs.  Our Charlotteville reality TV show, “Virginia Football: The building of a program” comes on Monday nights at 9pm.  Read more about it at the UVA Today news blog.
