U.Va. Engineer Builds Her Own Manta Ray
U.Va. biomechanical engineer Hilary Bart-Smith is trying to decipher the swimming secrets of rays, in order to employ them in an autonomous undersea vehicle. As part of the process, she built her own manta ray. Way cool.

a “stroke” of genius! Great idea to capitalize on nature’s design, as it seems to have been working for the Manta Ray for centuries now!!

Go Hilary, as an M.E. student from the 70′s when biomed was first ramping up, it is fascinating to see where the studies are going. Please continue with your efforts and try to envision where the program needs to go over the next 25 years. Your work is to be applauded.

As a ME 2012 graduate and someone who worked on the project for a summer, it is really exciting to see the project coming together. Congratulations and good luck for the future Prof. Bart-Smith.
