Totaling Up U.Va.’s Medal Count

OK, last post on the 2012 Summer Olympics. Probably.

This is more of a shout-out to Brian Schwartz at Streaking the Lawn, who has been all over the Olympic thing. It’s pretty well-known by now that U.Va. athletes and alums tallied three medals in London, all gold (congrats again to swimmers Lauren Perdue and Matt McLean, and soccer defender Becky Sauerbrunn!), and you may even have noted that only 20 entire nations had more wins than ‘Hoos.

But how does that compare to other U.S. schools?

According to Schwartz, the Cavs led the ACC in total golds; only N.C. State matched Virginia’s three medals. Across the nation, only nine schools brought home more gold, and 13 had more total medals. (The tally includes only medals won for the U.S.)

Also, NBC-29 had a story on a trio of Olympians who got a big welcome when they arrived back in Charlottesville on Monday night.

I lead tours in the summer through the office of undergraduate admission and one thing I always mention is how great of an athletics program we have here. Sporting events are such an awesome part of our student life here. The fact that we can see Division 1 ACC sports for free, is something that I feel a lot of the student body takes for granted. Being able to share with a tour group the number of medals ‘Hoos brought home to their home countries, and the sheer talent of the athletes here at UVa is truly spectacular. Congrats to every Wahoo in the summer games. You have made us proud. But it is time to come home. We want you all playing for one team, our team.

    Go Hoos.
