Students Get Out and SERVE; Employees Next

Reason No. 12,187 we love our students …

We received a press release earlier this month from Piedmont CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates),  a local non-profit that trains citizens to be legal advocates for children.  The release was touting the work of 10 U.Va. students — most of them first-years — who had spent much of Sept. 9 hand-addressing envelopes for a fundraising appeal.

The students were working as part of Project SERVE, an annual effort run through the orientation office that seeks to “introduce incoming students to service and service learning opportunities at U.Va. and to familiarize participants with some of the local agencies that rely on the continued dedication and commitment of the University community.” Besides Piedmont CASA, the students have volunteered at more than two-dozen other sites over the years.

Rachel Lloyd Miller, CASA’s advancement director, expressed her gratitude for the students’ efforts. “Every year they are an enthusiastic and thoughtful group of students who take CASA’s mission to heart, and for that we are very grateful,” she said.

 Of course, students aren’t the only ones at U.Va. who volunteer. Tomorrow, we’re expecting about 1,000 U.Va. employees to take part in the annual United Way Laurence E. Richardson Day of Caring, another event that matches willing volunteers with work that needs to be done in the community.
