Jan. 20, 2009: Right now I think chairs and beds are one of the greatest inventions to mankind. I’m SO exhausted right now. I need a weekend from my weekend. This week was unbelievably packed full with things to do from the moment I got out of class on Thursday up to this very moment I’m typing this.
But I’m quite excited to share today’s experience with all of you. From 2-8 p.m. today I went with a few friend from the Fine Arts Department to see the “Fotanian” in Fotan (one train stop away from school). The “Fotanian” is an art event that happens only two consecutive weekends a year. Fotan used to be a very industrial city however many of the industries move to Mainland China abandoning many warehouses in area. Now, many artists rent out rooms in the warehouses and convert them into their own personal studios and for the Fotanian they convert their studios into galleries! Many of the artists are from Hong Kong ranging from students to professors to professional HK artists.
There were probably over 170 artists and in the 6 hours we were there we probably only got to go through 20 galleries? I was fortunate enough to meet one of the HK’s famous artist, Wilson Shieh! He has been working as an artist for 15 years and he is very well known for Gongbi. His paintings are very contemporary though. He paints using traditional techniques, but explores very contemporary issues such as gender relations and sexuality.
It was incredible to actually be able to experience this event and have the opportunity to meet many local artists and actually get to talk to them!
